His Divine Holiness Hariprasad Swamiji envisioned Atmiya Vidya Mandir for the holistic development of children. This development encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual growth. Reflecting this vision, the school’s motto is ‘Union of Body, Mind, and Soul.’ In addition to education and spirituality, physical fitness is vital for a child’s overall well-being, and yoga is one of the best ways to achieve and maintain this fitness.
Yoga, an age-old practice that began in India centuries ago, derives its name from the Sanskrit word meaning “to join” or “unite,” reflecting the union of body and mind. Today, yoga is practiced in various forms worldwide and continues to gain popularity. According to the Sanskrit poet Bhartṛhari, regular yoga practice imbues individuals with qualities like courage, forgiveness, and mental peace.
On June 21, 2024, the students of Atmiya Vidya Mandir celebrated International Day of Yoga with great enthusiasm in the temple, performing various yoga aasans during the session.
Firstly, students practiced Surya Namaskar three times. Surya Namaskar warms up the entire body, improves flexibility, raises the heart rate, and boosts the immune system.
Secondly, they performed Anulom Vilom Pranayam, which aids in improving digestion and reducing stress—a common issue in today’s technology-laden era.
Following Anulom Vilom, students practiced Katichakraasan. This aasan is recommended for those with back problems, as it helps remove stiffness and corrects postural deformities while strengthening the waist muscles.
Next, students performed Bhujangaasan, a crucial daily practice that tones the body, strengthens the spine, and improves the functioning of the liver and kidneys.
Then, students performed Vakraasan, a simple yet effective aasan for relieving chronic back and shoulder pain, strengthening the abdominal muscles, and improving flexibility. Proper technique is essential to avoid strains or injuries.
Finally, the session concluded with Dhanuraasan, or the bow pose, which enhances blood circulation, stretches the entire front body, and tones the leg muscles.
Incorporating yoga into daily routine can significantly enhance physical health, mental clarity, and emotional stability, providing a strong foundation for both academic success and personal growth. As we navigate life’s challenges, making yoga a part of our lives can help us achieve balance, focus, and well-being. By embracing yoga, we can enhance our overall quality of life and contribute to a more peaceful and connected world. Let us carry the spirit of this day forward, fostering a culture of health, wellness, and unity through the practice of yoga.
